Southwest Airlines bookings: changes, cancellations and refunds with Touriyo

'Southwest doesn't charge fees to change your flights. You may be asked to pay a difference in fare if the new flight you're choosing costs more than your original reservation.' 'Most flights can be changed through our website or the Southwest app without needing to call. Basic fares cannot be changed. If you want to make a change to a reservation with a Basic fare, you must first upgrade your reservation to Choice, Choice Preferred, or Choice Extra fare.' 'You can change your flight up until 10 minutes before your original scheduled departure time... If you do not travel and do not change or cancel your flight at least 10 minutes before your original departure time, your reservation will be subject to our no-show policy.' If the new fare is lower, the difference is refunded to the original form of payment on refundable fares or held as a flight credit. Same-day change/standby free on Choice, Choice Preferred and Choice Extra (taxes and fees may apply); not on Basic. Partner (interline) itineraries: contact the partner carrier.

All fares can be cancelled without a fee ('No cancel fees. All fare types are eligible for cancellations without a fee') at least 10 minutes before original scheduled departure. Refund policy article: 'Choice Extra and Choice Preferred tickets are refundable. You can choose to either a) receive a method-of-payment refund or b) hold the value of the ticket as a Transferable Flight Credit... Choice tickets are non-refundable. The value of the ticket will be converted to a Transferable Flight Credit... Basic tickets are non-refundable. If value remains on the ticket at the time of cancellation, it will be converted to a flight credit.' Significant disruption (3+ h domestic / 6+ h international) or cancellation by Southwest: method-of-payment refund even for non-refundable tickets, including bag fees and unused extras; refunds processed within 7 business days. Roundtrips containing a Basic segment can only be cancelled in full (or after upgrading the Basic segment).

Refundable tickets: Choice Preferred and Choice Extra: 'As long as you cancel your reservation at least 10 minutes prior to the original scheduled departure of your flight, you're eligible to receive 100% of your ticket value (not including optional travel charges) as a refund to your original form of payment.'

Credits and vouchers: Flight credits created on or after May 28, 2025 expire: Basic fare flight credit 6 months; Choice/Choice Preferred/Choice Extra Transferable Flight Credit 12 months from the original booking date (or the earliest expiry of any credit/voucher used to pay). Flight credits created on or before May 27, 2025 do not expire. 'All travel must be completed by the expiration date.' Credits cannot be used for Getaways by Southwest packages; up to three forms of payment per booking.

Refund policy article: 'If you cancel your reservation within 24 hours of booking, you can choose either to a) receive a method-of-payment refund or b) hold the value of the ticket as a flight credit or Transferable Flight Credit (depending on the type of fare) to buy a future Southwest flight.' Fare page footnote: 'Basic fares are non-refundable except as allowed by our 24-hour cancellation policy.' No 7-day advance-purchase condition is stated in these texts.

Carry-on: 1 carry-on bag (24 x 16 x 10 in incl. wheels and handles, overhead bin) + 1 personal item (under the seat) free on all fares including Basic.

Checked bags: Standard bag up to 50 lb and 62 in (L+W+H). Fees apply to Basic, Choice and Choice Preferred; Choice Extra and A-List Preferred: two free bags; A-List and Rapid Rewards Credit Cardmembers: first bag free; active-duty military: free. Southwest Groups: free for itineraries ticketed by April 17, 2026.

Fees: One-way: 1st checked bag $35, 2nd $45 (Basic, Choice, Choice Preferred); Choice Extra free/free; 3rd+ bag $150; oversized 63 to 80 in $200 + standard fee; overweight 51 to 70 lb $100 + standard fee; 71 to 100 lb $200 + standard fee.

Name Change request form: 'Southwest will process a name change to an account or upcoming reservation based on legal documentation of a name change. Valid documents... old and new driver licenses, old and new identification cards, old and new passports, marriage license, divorce decree, and legal name change documentation.' Up to five reservations updated. 'Reservations booked or changed on or after May 28, 2025, including changes to a Passenger's name, may be subject to checked baggage fees and current fare rules.' Groups: 'Self-service name changes and corrections' / 'Unlimited name changes up to seventy-four (74) hours prior to departure time'. No fee for a legal-document name change is stated; no simple-typo correction policy was found.

'If you do not plan to travel, please cancel your reservation at least 10 minutes before the flight's original scheduled departure time... if you don't cancel your reservation at least 10 minutes before the flight's original scheduled departure time, your reservation will be canceled, and for Choice Extra or Choice Preferred reservations: the value of the ticket(s) will be refunded in the form of a Transferable Flight Credit... for Basic or Choice reservations: the funds will be forfeited.' Points bookings: Basic/Choice points forfeited; Choice Preferred/Extra points redeposited.
